Setting Up Your New Home After Moving

The day the truck pulls away is when the real work of settling in begins, and having a plan for that first week makes the difference between feeling at home in days versus months.

Unpack the kitchen first. It's the room with the most fragile, most-used items, and having it functional means you can cook instead of relying on takeout while you sort everything else. Bedrooms are next — a made bed and clear floor space go a long way after a physically exhausting few days.

Resist the urge to unpack everything at once. Work room by room, and break down boxes as you empty them so the space doesn't feel more chaotic than it already does. If you labelled boxes by room during packing, this step goes much faster.

Handle the administrative side early: change your address with the post office, your bank, and any subscriptions, and confirm utilities are active before you need them. It's easy to forget until something doesn't work.

Finally, give yourself permission to not be fully unpacked in a week. A new home takes time to actually feel like home — the goal for week one is functional, not finished.
